Ministry in Galilee – Son of Man

Jesus Ministers in Galilee Mark 1-2 and Luke 4-5

Mark 1:35-39

  • v35 Jesus knew he needed and deep prayer life with the father in order to minister to the crowds.
  • v36 It is possible that Jesus did not want to be found. Connection with the father sustained his earthly ministry.
  • v38 Jesus did not bend to men’s will nor what they thought was the best course of action.
  • It becomes clearer through Jesus ministry that he was not driven by impact, crowds or popularity. (Why not heal everyone?)
  • v39 Jesus continues preaching and teaching in other cities.

Mark 1:40-45

  • Notice the lepers desperate cry to be made clean (healed of leprosy).
  • v44 “say nothing” because the overwhelming response hindered Jesus’ ability to minister and diverted attention from him message. Mark 3:12 | Mark 5:43 | Mark 7:36
  • “Offer your cleansing what Moses commanded” Jesus wanted the leper to observe the OT regulations of ceremonial cleansing.
  • Though he had been healed he was still not ceremonial clean until he dis as instructed Leviticus 14:1-32. Jesus follows protocol.
  • v45 The leper ignored both of Jesus commands “don’t tell” and “get cleansed”.
  • This is an example of someone who benefits from the goodness of God but does not seek to obey Jesus’ words.
  • When Jesus asks us to do something we seek to obey with all of our might and with immediacy, obedience is not burdensome but beneficial. see 1 John 5:3.
  • “Say nothing to anyone” or “Be Silent” see Mark 1:25 Jesus doesn’t want his Messiahship to be announced by demons or be distorted by half truths or false testimony.
  • Obscured truth about Jesus is one of the woes Jesus gives the pharisees (key of knowledge) Luke 11:52.
  • Obscured truth about Jesus gives the religious leaders ammunition to accuse him of working with demons and liars.
  • It’s important that our testimony of Jesus is accurate with who Jesus says he is John 3. He loves us yet he confronts sin and he is faithful to the truth.

Mark 2:1-12

  • v1 Jesus’ home was in Capernaum.
  • v2 Jesus popularity is ramping up because he has been casting out demons and recently healed the leper.
  • Jesus when he did miracles accompanied with speaking the truth.
  • v4 We love songs about Jesus perusing us. We have to also ask ourselves to what level will we go to pursue Jesus.
  • The Paralytic and his friends would not be denied by any obstacle to be touched by Jesus. Even wreck Jesus’ house.
  • Jesus wants us to pursue him like he pursues us. The relationship is 2 way. See also woman with the issue of blood Mark 5:25–34.
  • False grace messages about the finished work of the cross and Jesus does everything for me are Severely crippling the body of Christ.
  • v5 It was a common belief that if you had a disease or affliction it was related to sin. This is sometimes the case See John 5:14
  • Because of the relentless faith of the paralytic and his friends. Jesus saw their genuinely repentant hearts and forgave his sins.
  • Jesus used this strategy to liberate the paralytic from guilt related to sin. “are forgiven” refers to driving away sin see Psalm 103:12 | Jeremiah 31:34
  • v7 The Scribes are correct that only God can forgive sins see Isaiah 43:25. The scribes were incorrect that Jesus blasphemed.
  • v8 “His spirit”. When Jesus said “Son your sins are forgiven” he already knew this would offend the scribes because of their knowledge of the scriptures.
  • v9 Jesus could have started with “Get up and walk” which would have immediately astonished everyone.
  • v10 He wanted them to know that he had the authority to forgive sins as the “Son of Man” See Daniel 7:13-14 (Cloud Rider)
  • The book of Daniel predicts the coming of the messiah in Daniel 9. This is Jesus way of Saying. “I am the one in Daniel 9 as predicted”
  • Jesus is saying to forgive sin is easier its the bearing the fruit of healing that is more difficult.
  • He already has a reputation of bearing good fruit through healing. They should already be concluding he is from God.
  • They don’t need another miracle to confirm he is from God. So he forgives sin instead.
  • v11 Jesus purposefully makes this conversation come to the surface so he can verify his authority to forgive sin with the miracle.

Son of Man Daniel 9

  • 539 BC – Medes and Persians are in control of Mesopotamia
  • Jeremiah 29:10-13 informs Daniel of the 70yr captivity in Babylon
  • v24 70 weeks are decreed to Israel and the City of Jerusalem
  • Week (Shabua) = divisable by 7 a week of years is 7 years (7×70=490yrs)
  • First 3 are done in part at Jesus first advent
    • Finish the transgression – Establishing a new order on earth devoid of sin Revelation 20:2-7 ; Isaiah 11
    • Put and end to sin – Judge sin. Matthew 25:31-32
    • Atone for wickedness – covering sin with the blood of the crucified messiah. Colossians 1:20
  • Second set of 3 are done at Jesus Second advent
    • Bring everlasting righteousness – The end of apostasy. 2 Thessalonians 2:3
    • Seal up vision and prophecy – No further revelation given. 1 Corinthians 13:7-9
    • Anoint the most holy – consecrate the holy place in the millennial temple. Ezekiel 40-48
  • v25 Issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until an Anointed One 7 weeks (49yrs) and 62 weeks(434yrs) (69 weeks = 483yrs)
  • The 7 weeks is thought to be a representation of time that spanned Nehemiah and Malachi’s ministry
  • Israel at that time measured years in 360 day periods.
  • 4 purposed timelines
    • 538 B.C. Cyrus decree to Ezra to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. Ezra 1:1-4 Ezra 5:13-17
    • 517 B.C. Darius decree to Ezra to build the temple. Ezra 6:6-12
    • 458 B.C. Artaxerxes decree gives Ezra permission and supplies to rebuild temple. Ezra 7:11-26
    • 444 B.C. Artaxerxes decree gives Nehemiah permission and supplies to rebuild the city and walls. Nehemiah 2:1-8
  • Sir Robert Anderson’s “The Coming Prince” (1894) defends in great detail Artaxerxes 2nd decree
  • 483 years to the day from Artaxerxes decree to rebuild Jerusalem to Jesus triumphal entry.
  • Anderson used the 360-day year to calculate 173,880 (483yrs) days from the decree to the triumphal entry to the day!
  • If we use the current calendar structure 444 B.C. – 33 AD (476yrs) = 173,859 days.
  • Anderson’s view is well respected by most modern scholars.
  • Case in point. Anyone with Biblical knowledge would have been expecting him and the Pharisees deliberately rejected him.
  • Luke 3:15 ; Daniel 2:48
  • Only one time in the old testament is any part of the God head refereed to as the Son of Man see Daniel 7:13-14
  • Jesus is referred to as the Son of Man over 80 times in the 4 gospels.
  • Jesus furthers his point that he is the one in Daniel 7 by Ascending in the clouds.
  • The Book of Revelation further testifies that he will come back with the clouds Revelation 7:1
  • Jesus is the cloud rider of Daniel 7
